it was my first time to volunteer at the botak 100K aid station set up by takbo.ph & sponsored by sir amado's company (reinier pacific international shipping, inc). to be more honest, it wasn't really in my plans to join and be part of the support group there. it just so happened that certain events led to things that led me to being part of the crew.
we've had meetings about these, ung sa support mismo, daming nagpunta etc, pero when the actual thing was getting nearer, parang nagtaka ako why it seemed like, those people i was expecting to be there were "not there". nung una kasi ang dating for me is pwede shang gawing mala-outing kasi puro tropa ung kasama sa aid station eh, so its gonna be fun din diba ;) sa start, it was ganon. ang thought ko was, its gonna be fun! :) another mala-outing, pero may kasamang work, pero bottomline eh, fun sha :)
so there everything was "going according to plan" until nung saturday morning when i was gathering up the peeps for the grocery. medyo nagkagulu-gulo ung sked so the peeps who were initially going to be with me when we do the grocery were either, not going, or going to be late, or worse, not going to be there AT all. in the midst of all these hullabaloo. naiinis ako shempre kasi ung mga iniexpect kong andun wala eh so i texted a friend and told her na un nga, nafrufrustrate lang ako with what's happening, na parang, oh bakit wala sila, etc. after the usual "ranting session" ko with her via text (kasi alam ko busy din naman sha) i just continued with what has to be done (kahit na sa loob ko eh medyo bad trip na ako nun). pero keri lang. kailangan eh. at this point nawala ung thought na VOLUNTEER ako, na kahit anong mangyari eh dapat nandoon ako kahit wala sila.
eventually naman naayos na rin ung mga gamit para volunteers and sa runners (please see pictures here)
in the midst of all these whirlwind of events, napagkasya ko ang 3 happening in one day, grocery, ung despedida ni lauren, at ung actual manning ng booth. ang hirap mag organize ng tao, plus ako kasi ung tipong gusto ko things would go according to plan, pero at one point eh, narealize ko na, hassle naman if i let this rule my life diba, ung tipong i have to learn to adapt.
in the midst of the pagod and all, parang at the start ako eh sige gawa lang kasi nag volunteer ka eh so gawin mo yan. kahit na at times parang ung iba eh kiber lang sa mga dapat gawin, work lang ng work. bahala na si batman if ma recognize ka man o hindi, basta deep inside eh, alam mong ginawa mo ung pinangako mong gagawin AND ung hindi ka mag rereklamo about what you are doing despite of all the hardships and hassleness you might encounter during.
the aid station gig showed me a different side of races which i usually don't think of or appreciate even. its harder pala to wait for the runners as compared to be the ones running na rin. hirap sha kasi, hindi mo alam at what point and time sila darating, lalo na for this type of race na 100K. shempre you have to able to provide additional energy man lang sa mga runners who pass by, and tipong hindi ka mag rereklamo with what you do as a volunteer, moreso when the runners are there.
humbling experience din sha kasi to provide whatever need the runners and their personal support crew would need, parang its time to give back na diba :) ang saya rin ng feeling when the runners express their gratitude with the support they get from us. not necessarily from those we know, but most specially dun sa mga hindi mo kilala na naka appreciate sa ginagawa mo.
sa mga pinagsilbihan ko kanina sa botak, salamat sa opportunity to be of service :)
sa mga kasama kong nag serve kanina, salamat sa company and pleasure to be of service to the runners
sa mga susunod, tandaan na to give and not to count the cost. pag may magpasalamat, ngiti. pag wala, ngiti sabay tanong ano pang pwede ibigay :)
may sense pa ba? hehehe :) basta thanks :)
hanggang sa susunod na karera.

no more training wheels
this morning, i had my first ever official 15K race at the mizuno infinity run :) never din i imagine that i would be able to finish a race almost on target with my intended finish time. my first ever attempt also at doing long runs without pacers. AND i was timing myself also while running, first time ko ata to see myself reaching 5K mark na sub 30, (i was at 28 something when i checked my timer), although i wasn't able to check na sa 10K mark, pero i was actually amazed at myself at today's race.
i wasn't really expecting to finish that strong pero i do believe i did.
for the past few long distance races, i'd always relied on my pacers to help me with the race (docE sa 21k botak, bongZ sa slimmerun 16(15)K, at sa 21(18)K botak). para akong batang nag bibike na may training wheels, hindi pa sure kung kaya na mag isang umandar at mag balance while moving forward. always relying on the training wheels whenever may sablay, may sasalo agad. na when i fail i can always go back and ask my pacers on how to approach the race, if pwede mag fast na, or mag slow man for a while. pero kaninang race was different
for some weird reason when i saw pojie wearing his iamninoy runner shirt AND with an official 15K bib, napaisip ako na the last time he was not wearing his takbo singlet in a race, nag cramps ata sha (baguio) or something, basta he wasn't at the top of his game. (true enough well, after my CR break at the start, he told me sa middle of kalayaan to go ahead, he'd just follow). pero, he never did na (well not until the last K na ata un sa paikot infront of fullybooked did i chanced upon pojie). while pojie was "out" na as my pacer, there was still rod, who accompanied me most of the time. okay naman, halos sabay, minsan na uuna na ako, tas bigla shang susulpot to catch up with me, at times, i'd tell him if we can slow down, pero for some weird reason, my legs/feet didn't want to slow down as much, so what really happened was, i went a bit faster pa nga, or i tried following other people in front of me! hahaha
upon reaching the turnaround point, i was thinking about slowing down na talaga, my legs were a bit tired na rin, and feeling ko baka kapusin ako sa end kasi, for once, i think i started out strong (which is not naman the style i usually use talaga). for some fortunate turn of events, rod was able to accompany me until sa may makati ave ba un, tas bigla na shang nawala. sa loob loob ko, i was thinking, he'd just come from wherever to surprise me tas ayos, may pacer na ako ulit. but no, until the end, di ko na sha nagpang abot hehehe :) (woah, humahalimaw na ba din ako? hahahaha) ayon, as i was traversing the long stretch of kalayaan flyover going back, i was able to run alongside TBR, and a few meters ahead, i saw a familar face, isang classmate sa mizuno run clinic. upon getting closer, i was able to read the paper at the back, HE'S the 1:30 pacer! yahoo! keri pa akong mag 1:30! hahahaha
pero sa katamarang palad, medyo di ko na kinayang mag strong finish sa dulo, upon reaching the foot of the kalayaan bridge, medyo i accepted na the fact na hindi ko ata kayang mag strong finish, walang pogi pose sa end tulad ng botak 21K hahaha. sa isip ko, since solo flight na ako nito, finish na lang muna. hayaan na yang PR na yan, hassle eh :) pero pride still made me go at it. since the stronger runners are still within sight, i guess i can still push myself at it. konting tiis na lang, i told myself. go lang! push push tulad ng mga sinasabi ng mga pacers ko before. nag stick din sa mind ko na "timmy don't walk, slow jog, let's go bro" kasunod nito ang mga katangang " ano senyo, 2 buckets?" kaya sige lang, fight! sugod! toma! hehehe
at the back of my mind, konti na lang ito pero bakit parang ang layo layo pa? pero sige lang fight. tapos, nung asa tapat na ako ng fullybooked ata, narinig ko ang isang familiar voice na tinatawag ako. aba! si pojie! tuluyan ko na ngang naunahan sha, pero at least hindi naman na ganoong kalayuan. natuwa na lang din ako nung nakita ko ung finish line, sabi ko sa sarili ko bibilisan ko na to, kasi kaunti na lang eh. sa awa ng diyos i was able to finish a bit over lang than my intended time, pero sige lang. nice fight, nice time. nice race. walang ulan. :)
after the race, i was able to realize na, wow, ang bilis ko naman (pero di ko unang naisip un, may nagsabi lang sa akin na "ganda ng time mo kanina! magaling magaling!... sobrang good bibes!) sa loob loob ko, wala namang mga bibe don ah hahaha. pero seriously, hmm i was expecting a good time, oo PERO based sa pacers ko. eh kanina, hindi naman sa nag mamayabang, hindi ko na nasundan ung pace na sinet ng pacers ko. it just boiled down to what i wanna achieve, at the speed that i wanted to achieve it, AND at time i wanted it. parang another realization through running na, i can achieve things if i really wanted it, if i willed it. no one else naman would be able to hinder me to achieve my goals except me.
this race was a big race for me. initially because it was a friend's comeback race. akala ko un na yun. pero there was something bigger in store for me pala. na sa race na ito, i can achieve what i put my mind into, with the support of others shempre, pero i need to believe it, and to will it for it to become a reality :)
i guess the trainings and the mizuno run clinic actually paid off huh? (plus it made me lose the excess weight na rin to make me go faster hahaha).
pacers will always be there, pero i will no longer rely on them. i navigate my own ship. i decide what to do, when to go faster, etc and no one else will be blamed if i fail, pero if i succeed, shempre group effort hehehe :)
thank you for pacing me. thanks for inspiring me.

something to think about.
got this on one of the forums in takbo.ph
some are pang pa good vibes, while others are pang reflect.
53 RUNNERS COMMANDMENTS
1. Do not be a whiner. Nobody likes a whiner, not even other whiners.
2. Walking out the door is often the toughest part of a run.
3. Do not make running your life. Make it part of your life.
4. During group training runs, do not let anyone run alone.
5. Keep promises, especially ones made to yourself.
6. When doing group runs, start on time no matter who is missing.
7. The faster you are the less you should talk about your times.
8. Keep a quarter in your pocket. One day you will need to call for a ride.
9.Do not compare yourself to other runners.
10. All runners are equal, some are just faster than others.
11. Keep in mind that the later in the day it gets, the more likely it is that you will not run.
12. For a change of pace, get driven out and then run back.
13. If it was easy, everybody would be a runner.
14. When standing in starting lines, remind yourself how fortunate you are to be there.
15. Getting out of shape is much easier than getting into shape.
16. A bad day of running still beats a good day at work.
17. Talk like a runner. Singlets are worn on warm days. Tank tops are worn to the beach.
18. Do not talk about your running injuries. People do not want to hear about your sore knee or black toe.
19. Do not always run alone.
20. Do not always run with people.
21. Approach running as if the quality of your life depended on it.
22. No matter how slow you run it is still faster than someone sitting on a couch.
23. Keep in mind that the harder you run during training, the luckier you will get during racing.
24. Races are not just for those who can run fast.
25. There are no shortcuts to running excellence.
26. The best runs sometimes come on days when you did not feel like running.
27. Be modest after a race, especially if you have reason to brag.
28. If you say, Let us run this race together, then you must stay with that person no matter how slow.
29. Think twice before agreeing to run with someone during a race.
30. There is nothing boring about running. There are, however, boring people who run.
31. Look at hills as opportunities to pass people.
32. Distance running is like cod liver oil. At first it makes you feel awful, then it makes you feel better.
33. Never throw away the instructions to your running watch.
34. Do not try to outrun dogs.
35. Do not trust runners who show up at races claiming to be tired, out of shape, or not feeling well.
36. Do not wait for perfect weather. If you do, you will not run very often.
37. When tempted to stop being a runner, make a list of the reasons you started.
38. Never run alongside very old or very young racers. They get all of the applause.
39. Without goals, training has no purpose.
40. During training runs, let the slowest runner in the group set the pace.
41. The first year in a new age group offers the best opportunity for trophies.
42. Go for broke, but be prepared to be broken.
43. Spend more time running on the roads than sitting on the couch.
44. Make progress in your training, but progress at your own rate.
45. Winning means different things to different people.
46. Unless you make your living as a runner, do not take running too seriously.
47. Runners who never fail are runners who never try anything great.
48. Never tell a runner that he or she does not look good in tights.
49. Never confuse the Ben-Gay tube with the toothpaste tube.
50. Never apologize for doing the best you can.
51. Preventing running injuries is easier than curing them.
52. Running is simple. Do not make it complicated.
53. Running is always enjoyable. Sometimes, though, the joy does not come until the end of the run.
happy running! happy thoughts!

happy thoughts
after going through a couple races, a lot of people been noticing that i've been improving daw. they say i'm fast na daw. for me naman, parang wala namang change ah :) a lot of people have been asking, anong secret ko. for me, wala namang secret weapon eh. actually, hindi kasi sha "secret" kasi i always tell people about it.
what fuels me during races?
other than ung usual na well hydrated, well practiced, and knowing yourself, my main not-so-secret-weapon is this :
THINK
HAPPY THOUGHTS.

the other things i've mentioned above, for sure maraming blogs about those, na kung saan saang nagsasabi na mag train ng mabuti, proper hydration etc, pero parang i don't see often kung anong mental strategies ang ginagawa nila. (madamot ba sila at ayaw mag share? haha) yung approach ko naman is just about using common sense eh, what made me remember to think about happy thoughts is the movie legally blonde (yup ung kay reese whitherspoon) na sinabi nya something about shopping makes her happy, etc, basta parang for her shopping (pero alam ko dapat exercise ito eh) makes her happy, and that by exercising, it triggers the release of endorphins, and endorphins make people happy or something to that effect). basta! by thinking of happy thoughts, it takes your mind off of the hassleness you'd encounter during races, lalo na if long distances at medyo nabobore ka na sa haba, tapos wala ka pang pacemate diba, ang saya!
what are happy thoughts, you may ask. for me happy thoughts are thoughts that make you forget negative stuff, or those that make you feel good. in a friend's term GOOD VIBES.

naisip ko na lang, mas malakas ako ngayon, no point in wallowing in "negativism" kasi andun na ako eh, napasubo na, panindigan ko na lang diba? :) kaya naman yan, mas malamig sa baguio, and the cool weather would compensate ung degree of difficulty VS heat. for me, ung heat ang mas mahirap na kalaban, and in this case, hindi sha gaanong factor kaya keri lang.
while we were doing na the hellish uphills (well actually di sha hellish, mataas lang talaga at nakatatamad takbuhin ang 3k-long na uphill all the way), wala akong iniisip na iba kundi ang image na ito:

happy thoughts na mga nag aantay sa amin na makarating sa finish line.
people like this make me want to finish the race despite the difficulties, be it internal, external or emotional man, physical, kasi i know, at the end of the day/race, meron mga taong nag aantay sa aking muling pagbalik.
before the baguio trip, i had a misunderstanding with a friend which somewhat dampened my GV (good vibes). good thing we were able to settle things and there, nabalik ung totally good vibes. na solve ung conflict before race day, kaya ayot ang result ng takbo.
during the baguio trip, sobrang daming happy thoughts na naipon sa aking thought bank, kaya din siguro di ako gaano napagod or nahirapan sa route na maraming nagsasabing mahirap. tulad ng sinabi ni bongz: mind over matter. pero magandang i compliment ang mind over matter ng THINK HAPPY THOUGHTS, at GOOD VIBES. kasi pag mind over matter lang, your mind might mind, and baka utakan ka lang hahaha :)
pero if may resbak ng HAPPY THOUGHTS at GOOD VIBES, 2 vs 1, panalo si 2 hahaha :)
so there. anong masasabi mo dun?

post-baguio thoughts
the past few weeks prior to baguio have been a whirlwind of events which revolves around running, work, family and the balance i need to give to ALL these. so far, it seems like the most i've been giving priority/ attention to is my running. improvement in my running time has been greatly noticed by my runner friends , (even to the point calling me "hoff"). for me okay to, but then again, i realize that there are other facets of my life, facets that i tend to overlook at times, primarily because i've been focusing on my running.
at one time, on the way to makati, i was talking to a friend about this topic. I told her na parang i'm not being able to maximize my potentials anymore. knowing myself, i know that if i focus on it, i can do it. i can achieve my goals. no matter what other people might say to me, it will not deter me from doing what i set my mind into doing.
this made me think of what i wanna do in life. do i want to be in an office? do i wanna go out and explore the world? do i want to work in a sports setting where i can do both marketing AND at the same time immerse myself into sports further?
i do believe i need to re assess myself soon, actually SOONER. where do i want to go? who do i want to accompany me in my journey?
like what a friend replied to one of my blog entries, i need to enjoy this race called life. yes, life is a race, actually, a series of races.
in this fast-paced mary, we need to ask ourselves on what is MY gameplan for this. what approach are you going to use, positive split, negative split, chill running, steady running or "WOW ___________" moments.
ang tanong ko now is, anong PACE mo? (how steady can you handle all the obstacles that we will face along the way? are you going to sit back and whine? or will you think of cheating the race?)
you tell me. :D

fun truths by Bob Ong.
21. “Ang pag-ibig parang imburnal… nakakatakot mahulog… at kapag nahulog ka, it’s either by accident or talagang tanga ka. Nalaman kong hindi final exam ang passing rate ng buhay. hindi ito multiple choice, identification, true or false, enumeration or fill-in-the- blanks na sinasagutan kundi essay na isinusulat araw-araw. Huhusgahan ito hindi base sa kung tama o mali ang sagot, kundi base sa kung may kabuluhan ang mga isinulat o wala. Allowed ang erasures.”

can you still understand me?
the past few days have been a whirlwind of emotions.
extremely happy
extremely sad
confused
lost
controlled
at a loss
focused
dedicated
motivated
inspired
exceeds expectations
forward-looking
aiming to go beyond what can be seen
thinking of what should and could have been
entertained thoughts of shutting down
of moving on, growing up, getting stronger.
strength derived from a group,
strength in numbers, sometimes
strength derived from within.
there were moments when everything would look alright,
but deep inside there is something that can make me feel fright.
sometimes i draw strength just by thinking of you. sometimes its you that make me feel blue.
underneath the smile and happiness,
they sometimes cannot see
that there is another side of me.
